Samba overview
Samba is the standard Windows interoperability suite of programs for Linux and Unix.
Samba is Free Software licensed under the GNU General Public License, the Samba project is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy.
Since 1992, Samba has provided secure, stable and fast file and print services for all clients using the SMB/CIFS protocol, such as all versions of DOS and Windows, OS/2, Linux and many others.
Samba is an important component to seamlessly integrate Linux/Unix Servers and Desktops into Active Directory environments. It can function both as a domain controller or as a regular domain member.

So can this be used to upgrade the Apple SMB in 10.6 and before? If so, how?
I volunteer for a group that refurbishes donated computers for benevolent causes in the third world and am not quite sure if this can be used to fix it or not. I looked at the developer site, but didn't find the answers. But it may be that I just didn't know where to look.

CRITICAL SECURITY UPDATE: Samba versions 4.1.11 and 4.0.21 patch CVE-2014-3560 which allows hackers to access superuser control of computers, allowing them to do anything they like. It doesn't get any worse. If you use Samba, update ASAP!

I have used SMS/Samba for many years. Apple SMB doesn't seem to correctly support SMB version 1 which is used on some Fuji and Kyocera printers with Copy/Scan to Share options. Tried Apple Server version but could not get it to work with the printers. Installed Samba, disabled Apple Server SMB, configured with just a simple single share, no print options etc. and it has been stable and fully operational. That particular share is currently available to all users in the building. Works well and reliably. I have added a couple of extra lines into the Apple startup sequence at the UNIX level for the share creation which doesn't affect anything else. I can recommend this software as stable and good stuff. Apple is lazy and is dumbing down a lot of networking software such as NFS, SMB and obviously AppleTalk. Sad. NFS won't work with Debian Linux NFS servers (.dot file issues) and so on. Samba solves at least the SMB problems.
